Biofiltration has emerged as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for mitigating offensive odors caused by hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia (NH₃), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial environments. The performance of biofilters is heavily influenced by the choice of packing material, which not only determines microbial habitat but also contributes significantly to installation costs. This study evaluated three compost mixtures—derived from chicken manure combined with lignocellulosic residues such as pruning waste, sugarcane bagasse, and rice husk—as potential packing materials for simultaneous removal of H₂S and NH₃. A laboratory-scale biofiltration system was used to simulate gas concentrations typical of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). At low H₂S levels (6–36 ppm) and NH₃ concentrations (0–1 ppm), all three biofilters achieved 100% removal efficiency. Under high load conditions, with H₂S reaching 250 ppm and NH₃ up to 19 ppm, H₂S removal remained above 90% across all systems, while NH₃ removal exceeded 90% only in the sugarcane bagasse-based biofilter. Among the tested mixtures, the sugarcane bagasse–manure compost demonstrated superior performance, achieving a maximum H₂S removal of 99% and NH₃ removal of 95%, along with the highest elimination capacity: 15 g H₂S/m³·h and 0.6 g NH₃/m³·h. These results highlight the potential of sugarcane bagasse compost as an efficient, low-cost, and sustainable packing material for large-scale odor control in WWTPs and other industries.RIC8A Antibody supplier The compost’s favorable physicochemical properties—including high water-holding capacity, adequate buffering capacity, and rich microbial community—support sustained biological activity even under fluctuating pollutant loads.SLC2A4 Antibody References Furthermore, this approach valorizes agricultural and organic waste streams, contributing to circular economy principles.PMID:35188596 The findings underscore the feasibility of using locally available biomass residues in engineered bioremediation systems, offering a practical pathway toward reducing environmental impact and operational expenses in air pollution control.MedChemExpress (MCE) offers a wide range of high-quality research chemicals and biochemicals (novel life-science reagents, reference compounds and natural compounds) for scientific use.
